Socio-Economically Disadvantaged Groups Cell

A “Socio-Economically Disadvantaged Groups Cell” (SEDG Cell) in a college is a dedicated unit designed to provide support and assistance to students from economically and socially disadvantaged backgrounds, aiming to ensure equitable access to quality education by offering financial aid, academic support, counseling, and other services to help them succeed in their studies despite their socio-economic challenges.

What does the SEDGs Cell do?

  • Protects the rights of SEDG students
  • Provides academic and socio-emotional support
  • Monitors and implements orientation and bridge courses for SEDG students
  • Ensures the implementation of government policies for SEDG students
  • Implements laws and preventive measures against discrimination and atrocities
  • Creates awareness of government and institutional schemes and scholarships

  • Establishes a support network to address challenges related to academics, mental health, and finances.

Who are SEDG students?

Students from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds face challenges in accessing quality education due to historical, economic and socio-cultural reasons.


Objectives of SEDGs Cell:

To provide socio-emotional and academic support and mentoring for the students belonging to the SEDGs through proper counselling and monitoring Programme.

To ensure proper implementation and monitoring of orientation and bridge courses designed by the HEIs to benefit SEDGs students.

 

Key functions of an SEDG Cell:

Financial Assistance:

  • Guiding students on accessing scholarships, fee waivers, and educational loans.
  • Identifying eligible students for financial aid programs.

Academic Support:

  • Offering remedial classes to bridge any academic gaps.
  • Providing peer tutoring and access to additional learning resources.

Skill Development:

  • Conducting workshops on soft skills, technical skills, and career readiness.
  • Preparing students for job applications and career opportunities.

Counseling Services:

  • Providing psychological and career counseling to address challenges faced by students.
  • Offering mentorship and guidance to navigate academic and personal issues.

Awareness Campaigns:

  • Informing students about government schemes and other support initiatives available to socio-economically disadvantaged groups.

How it works:

Student Identification: 

  • The college identifies students belonging to socio-economically disadvantaged groups based on specific criteria like family income, caste, or other relevant factors.

Dedicated Staff: 

  • A team of dedicated staff within the SEDG Cell manages the support programs and interacts directly with students.

Application Process: 

  • Eligible students usually need to apply to the SEDG Cell to access the available support services.

Objectives

  • To help and empower the persons with disabilities –students, teacher, non-teaching staff to participate fully in the academic, intellectual, social and cultural life of college on an equal basis on par with other.
  • To aid and advise the students belonging to marginalized sections including the scheduled castes, scheduled tribes, other backward communities, minority communities, women and people special needs pursuing various programmes in the College.
  • Supervise and oversee the effective implementation of policies on programmes for addressing specials needs and to provide equal opportunity to all.
  • To prepare barrier free formalities/procedures for admission/ registration of students belonging to the disadvantaged groups of society.
  • To disseminate the information related to schemes and programmes for the welfare of the socially weaker section as well as notifications/memoranda, office orders of the Government, or other related agencies/organizations issued from time to time.

Functions

  1. To ensure equity and equal opportunity to the community at large in the college and bring about social inclusion.
  2. To enhance the diversity among the students, teaching and non-teaching staff population and at the same time eliminate the perception of discrimination.
  3. To create a socially congenial atmosphere for academic interaction and for the growth of healthy interpersonal relationships among the students coming from various social backgrounds.
  1. To make efforts to sensitize the academic community regarding the problems associated with social exclusion as well as aspirations of the marginalized communities.
  2. To help individuals or a group of students belonging to the disadvantaged section of society to contain the problems related to discrimination.
  3. To look into the grievances of the weaker section of society and suggest amicable solution to their problems.
  4. To disseminate the information related to schemes and programmes for the welfare of the socially weaker section as well as notifications/memoranda, office orders of the Government, or other related agencies/organizations issued from time to time.
  5. To prepare barrier free formalities/procedures for admission/ registration of students belonging to the disadvantaged groups of society.
  6. To establish coordination with the Government and other agencies/organizations to mobilize academic and financial resources to provide assistance to students of the disadvantaged groups.
  7. To organize periodic meetings to monitor the progress of different schemes.
  8. To adopt measures to ensure due share of utilization by SC/ST in admissions, recruitments (teaching and non-teaching posts) and to improve their performances.
  9. To sensitize the college on the problems of SC/ST and other disadvantaged groups.

OBJECTIVE 

The primary objectives of a Health Care Cell are to promote health awareness, provide accessible healthcare services, and support mental health initiatives within the community. The cell aims to enhance knowledge about physical and mental health, preventive measures, and healthy lifestyles among students and staff. It also ensures easy access to medical consultations, including telehealth options, while offering resources and counselling to address mental health issues and reduce stigma. Preventive health programs, such as regular screenings and workshops on topics like substance abuse prevention and nutrition, are implemented to foster a healthier community. Additionally, the cell focuses on enhancing emergency preparedness through training in first aid and response. Monitoring and improving food quality in hostels and canteens is another critical aspect, alongside facilitating collaboration with local healthcare providers. Finally, the Health Care Cell encourages feedback to continuously improve its services and fosters a community culture that promotes healthy behaviors and wellness activities.

Sports

SMIT gives lot of thrust in the overall development of the students. As a part of the above, vital care is imparted in promoting sport activities throughout the year.

Sports and Games is an area much sought after by the student community of this college. Play grounds, 400 metres athletic track, swimming pool and equipment for outdoor and indoor games facilities are available for meeting the enthusiasm of such students and faculty.

Students of this college have the honour of being frequently selected to represent the Anna University in many teams. They have made remarkable achievements as winners and Runners – up ranging from the Inter – Collegiate to university level in games and athletic events and have retained the championship in the university division.

Extension activities

The National service scheme (NSS) of SMIT is a funded unit (2024114094) that aims at insisting students in social welfare activities. The core objective of NSS -SMIT is to help the students to realize the importance and the power of social service through awareness program and camps. They are supported with necessary resources namely mentoring, consultation and networking. The first duty of the students should be, not to treat their period of study as one of the opportunities for indulgence in intellectual luxury, but for preparing themselves for final dedication in the service of those who provided the sinews of the nation with the national goods & services so essential to society. Advising them to form a living contact with the community in whose midst their institution is located, he suggested that instead of undertaking academic research about economic and social disability, the students should do “something positive so that the life of the villagers might be raised to a higher material and moral level”.

Admission in Hostel

Admission to the hostel is based-on First come first serve policy. Students who seek admission to this hostel, have to submit an application to the warden in a prescribed, form with a passport size photograph affixed and duly signed by the student and parent / guardians.

Following facilities are provided in the Hostel

  • The college offers a very comfortable living accommodation with separate hostels for boys and girls within the campus under the care of resident wardens. There is one hostel for boys and one for girls with enough space to accommodate the out station students.
  • The college has separate hostel facilities for boys and girls with all amenities. Utmost care is taken to serve wholesome food. Adequate security arrangements have been provided for safety and security of the inmates.
  • The girls’ hostel houses around 400 girls. It has an independent kitchen, mess, health equipment, common room with telephone facilities.
  • Boys’ hostel accommodates up to 750 boys with a separate mess, common room etc. Considerable stress is laid on a clean and healthy environment.
  • The hostel provides hygienic and quality food to suit diverse tastes and preferences. A comfortable mess hall has also been provided. The hostel rooms are provided with table, chairs, cupboards, beds, common bath, and hot water facilities. The other common facilities include availability of telephone and television.
